AFRICAN AMERICANS IN PARIS

Global Africana Studies Experience

This is my first study abroad project. Before embarking on this intriguing journey, I had fears about the language barrier and the expectations for the course's visual and digital expectations. I had never used a 360-degree camera before and wasn’t sure how the website would turn out. However, after working with my instructor: Dr. Bryan Carter and other students on the trip, I was introduced to new methods of storytelling that allow me to share my experience with the world.

MY PROJECT, STEP BY STEP

Discovering New Angles

With this project, I had to determine what my focus or topic of study would be. In addition to the assigned tours and conversations surrounding the African-American and black presence in Paris, I used every waking moment to learn something new. On this trip, I learned a valuable lesson in photography, which I hope to transform into a newfound hobby. I was exposed to a new language and culture; this shaped my understanding of the world and gave me further insight into the inner workings of our global community. I wanted to portray this learning process through the pictures and videos I captured while on this trip.

"The paradox of education is precisely this- that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated"
